About Real Word Count
A clean, fast, easy-to-use online word counter that respects your privacy.
What Real Word Count Is
Real Word Count is a free online word counter that provides instant text statistics — word count, character count (with and without spaces), sentence count, paragraph count, estimated reading time, and estimated speaking time. It runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript. No server receives your text, no account is required, and there are no limits on how much text you can analyze.
The tool is designed for simplicity, privacy, accessibility, and performance. It loads quickly, works offline after the first visit, and presents results in a clear, readable layout.
Who Can Use It
Real Word Count is useful for anyone who works with text and needs quick, reliable statistics:
- Students — checking essay and assignment length requirements.
- Writers and bloggers — hitting word-count targets for articles, posts, and stories.
- Editors — verifying lengths across multiple pieces quickly.
- Professionals — preparing reports, proposals, speeches, and presentations.
- Social media managers — confirming character limits for platforms like X/Twitter, LinkedIn, and meta descriptions.
- Translators and localization specialists — getting baseline word counts for quoting and billing.

How Counting Happens
All text processing occurs locally in your browser. When you type or paste text into the editor, the statistics update instantly using client-side JavaScript. Your text never leaves your device, is never transmitted to a server, and is never stored in any database.
You can verify this by disconnecting from the internet after the page loads — the word counter continues to work fully offline. For your convenience, your theme preference (light or dark mode) is saved in localStorage so the site remembers your choice.
Design Principles
- Simplicity: One page, one purpose. No clutter, no upsells, no distractions.
- Privacy: Your text stays on your device. Text processing runs 100% locally in your browser with no text uploads, no text storage, and no user accounts.
- Accessibility: Semantic HTML, sufficient contrast, keyboard navigation, screen-reader support, and respect for
prefers-reduced-motion. - Performance: Minimal JavaScript, no frameworks in the critical path, fast loads, works offline.
Honest Limitations
Automated word and sentence counting has inherent limitations. You should be aware of the following:
- Languages without word boundaries: For Chinese, Japanese, Thai, and similar languages, the fallback whitespace-based counting may under-count words.
- Sentence detection edge cases: Abbreviations (
e.g.,Dr.), unconventional punctuation, and creative writing styles may cause over- or under-counting. - Paragraph conventions: The tool expects blank-line separation. Single line breaks do not create new paragraphs.
- Reading and speaking estimates: These are rough guidelines based on average English prose. Actual speed varies by content complexity, familiarity, and individual pace.
- Character encoding: Character count uses UTF-16 code units (JavaScript
string.length). Some emoji and rare characters count as two code units.
For critical work — legal filings, medical documents, publishing contracts — always verify counts manually or with the target platform's official tools.
