By accessing and using Real Word Count (the "Website"), you agree to these Terms & Conditions ("Terms"). If you do not agree, please do not use the Website.

These Terms apply to all visitors, users, and anyone who accesses the Website. They form a binding agreement between you and the operator of Real Word Count.

Permitted Use

You may use Real Word Count for personal, educational, professional, or commercial purposes, including:

• Counting words, characters, sentences, and paragraphs in your own text.
• Estimating reading and speaking time for your own content.
• Copying statistics summaries for reports, invoices, client updates, or personal records.
• Using the tool offline after the initial page load.

You agree not to use the Website for any unlawful purpose, to attempt to compromise its availability, or to reverse-engineer its client-side logic for malicious purposes.

Your Responsibility for Text Entered

You are solely responsible for any text you type or paste into the word counter. The Website does not review, filter, store, or transmit your text. Because all processing happens in your browser, we have no visibility into your content and cannot moderate, back up, or recover it.

Do not enter sensitive personal data, credentials, classified information, or content that violates laws or third-party rights. While your text never leaves your device, you should still exercise appropriate caution.

Automated Estimates — Not Guaranteed Accuracy

The statistics provided by Real Word Count are generated by automated algorithms running in your browser. They are estimates and may not match the counting rules of every application, platform, or institution.

• Word count uses Unicode-aware segmentation for English and falls back to whitespace splitting. Results may differ from Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or other tools.
• Sentence count detects terminating punctuation (., !, ?) and ignores repeated punctuation and decimal points. Abbreviations, unconventional punctuation, and creative formatting may cause discrepancies.
• Paragraph count requires blank-line separation. Single line breaks do not create new paragraphs.
• Character count uses UTF-16 code units (JavaScript string.length). Some characters (emoji, rare scripts) count as two units.

For critical work — legal filings, academic submissions with strict limits, publishing contracts, medical documentation — always verify counts with the target platform's official tool or manual review.

Reading and Speaking Time Estimates

Reading time is estimated at 200 words per minute — a standard average for silent reading of English prose. Speaking time is estimated at 130 words per minute — a typical pace for presentations, podcasts, or voice-overs. Both round up to the nearest minute with a 1-minute minimum for non-empty text.

These are rough planning guidelines. Actual speed varies significantly by content complexity, reader familiarity, language, and individual pace. Do not rely on them for precise scheduling.

No Guarantee of Uninterrupted Availability or Perfect Accuracy

Real Word Count is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, express or implied. We do not warrant that the Website will be:

• Uninterrupted, timely, secure, or error-free.
• Free of bugs, omissions, or inaccuracies in counting logic.
• Compatible with all browsers, devices, or future browser versions.
• Available in any specific geographic region.

The Website may be temporarily unavailable due to maintenance, hosting issues, or factors beyond our control. We reserve the right to modify, suspend, or discontinue the Website at any time without notice.

Intellectual Property

Website design, code, and content: The visual design, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, copy, and all other original creative elements of Real Word Count are the intellectual property of the Website operator. All rights reserved.

Your text: You retain all rights to any text you enter into the word counter. We do not claim ownership, license, or any interest in your content. Your text never leaves your browser.

Open-source dependencies: The Website is built with Astro, Tailwind CSS, and the Geist font family. Their respective licenses apply.

External Links

The Website may contain links to third-party sites (e.g., Google Fonts, Astro, Tailwind CSS). These links are provided for reference or attribution. We do not control, endorse, or assume responsibility for the content, privacy practices, or availability of any third-party site.

Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, the operator of Real Word Count shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, exemplary, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, use, profits, or goodwill, arising from:

• Your use of or inability to use the Website.
• Any inaccuracies in word, character, sentence, or paragraph counts.
• Any reliance on reading or speaking time estimates.
• Any interruption, suspension, or discontinuation of the Website.
• Any action taken based on statistics provided by the Website.

Our total liability for any claim arising from these Terms or your use of the Website shall not exceed the amount you paid to use the Website (which is zero).

Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion or limitation of certain damages. In those jurisdictions, our liability is limited to the maximum extent permitted by law.

Changes to the Website and These Terms

We may update the Website (features, design, counting logic) and these Terms & Conditions at any time. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page will reflect the most recent change to the Terms.
